Hands up if you're guilty of throwing clothes on a chair, or using floor space and table tops to pile up miscellaneous stuff? Yep, that's what I thought. Too many of us to count! Our bedrooms should be our safe ports - a place where we can think clearly and rest - but often mess gets in the way of Feng Shui. Of course cleaning it up would solve the problem, but what if the problem is an imbalance between the number of items and amount of storage space? If you find your self walking into your room only to be overwhelmed by the disorder, then maybe it's time to sort through your belongings and get more storage solutions.
Bin, Donate, Keep
First, take some time to sort through your possessions and see what you want to hold on to. Look, no-one can tell you what you shouldn't keep (some of us are more sentimental than others!) but as a rule of thumb, if you can't remember why you've been holding on to something, or it doesn't stir any positive emotion, then it might be time to let it go. It's funny how much sentiment we place on clothes and other material items, but really be honest about what you truly want or need in your life and you and your room will feel much better! Make three piles: bin, donate, and keep.
Reimagine & Redesign
Once your room is filled only with the things that serve a purpose (to bring you joy, to inspire you, or to make your day-to-day life easier or more meaningful), it's time to reconsider existing storage solutions. Now that you know exactly what you want in your bedroom, you can re-imagine your haven and choose how you want to keep your belongings neatly tucked away. Cramming clothes into drawers, throwing shoes into a wardrobe, and stacking books, jewellery and other bits and pieces on a much-too-small shelf is a one-way ticket back to a cluttered bedroom.
Shelves & Wardrobes
"Out of sight, out of mind" doesn't really work, if you open your wardrobe doors to be faced with the very mess you've been trying to avoid. If you don't have enough storage space in your room, why not get a new wardrobe of shelves? A walk in wardrobe is the perfect hybrid of the two, giving your clothes enough space to breathe, your shoes room to line up, and other items like spare bedding and boxes of photographs a place to live. If you can't justify a new wardrobe, getting a cupboard or some shelving such as wardrobe shelving installed is a great way to keep your items in one place, and your bedroom clear of any mess. Paying attention to something as simple as storage solutions can open up your bedroom and give you the peace of mind you deserve.
